Sandals Antigua Prepares Students for Work in Tourism

The country’s hospitality industry should be in good hands years from now. This, as several young men and women were recently afforded the opportunity to learn about the operations of one of the world’s leading resorts located in Antigua.

Sandals Grande Antigua Resort and Spa opened its doors to over twenty Grade 5 students and teachers of the St. Nicholas Primary School, allowing the future leaders a chance to see what it takes to make the hotel a successful business.

The students were taken on a tour of the property, stopping by strategic stations where team members and managers spoke to the visitors on what happens behind the scenes.

Some of the highlights included the Concierge Department which pays special attention to guests and their needs, the Resort Shop, Housekeeping and how rooms are prepared and Island Routes where guests book tours. The students were told how important customer service is in executing tasks.

One key area that was presented to the students was Guest Services headed by Shernell Connor who is responsible for handling guests’ issues and concerns. She explained to the group that, “Here at Sandals, we ensure that all of our guests are having a good time. This would help us to get good reviews which would then lead to more persons choosing to stay at our resort and driving the country’s economy as well.”

The St. Nicholas Primary ‘schoolers’ were next treated to refreshments while learning about the Food and Beverage Department and the kitchen and dining room staff that caters to the restaurants in the resort.

At the conclusion of the tour, General Manager Gaurav “Mr. G” Sindhi encouraged the students to work hard so they could make a meaningful contribution to the tourism and hospitality industry or whichever career path they choose.

“Tourism is extremely important to Antigua and Barbuda and it will take young, intelligent and enthusiastic men and women to develop and sustain it. Sandals takes pride in training team members so if you eventually decide to join our family, it will come with many benefits and opportunities for growth.”

Teachers and students commended the Sandals team for what they described as an insightful and exciting experience.
