Antigua & Barbuda Minister of Tourism explores expanding its presence in the German market

Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism, The Hon. Asot Michael has indicated that Antigua and Barbuda is looking at the possibility of re-opening the Antigua and Barbuda Tourist Office in Germany.

This announcement comes following a courtesy visit by Antigua and Barbuda’s Honourary Consul to Germany Dr. Werner Giersch earlier in the month.

In 2011, the Ministry of Tourism and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority announced a consolidation of its European offices as part of a restructuring and efficiency drive.

Commenting on discussions held at the meeting, Minister Michael said: “We are considering our options as it relates to re-establishing a base in Germany, and assigning a dedicated sales team to the region, providing on-the-ground support.
Our German market grew by 8.9% from the period January – November 2014, compared to the same period in 2013. The market is our second largest European market after Italy, and we are working to further build on the relationship established with our trade partners from the area.”

Minister Michael said, “A feasibility study will be conducted to determine the viability of re-opening the German Office.”

Prior to its closure, the German office was headed up by Dr. Werner Giersch, who has had over 22 years experience in tourism marketing for Antigua and Barbuda.

A proposal to market Antigua and Barbuda from a German base will be presented by Dr. Giersch and reviewed by The Ministry of Tourism.

Currently, Antigua and Barbuda’s UK & European marketing is managed from its UK Headquarters, in London, with the office responsible for growing market share from Europe and driving greater operational efficiencies.

Antigua and Barbuda’s arrivals from the UK and Europe continue to rise significantly, with arrivals up for the year to date.

The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism remain committed to its key European markets and continue to provide seamless representation to all travel partners and clients.
