As part of our World Water Day activities for 2015, Sandals Grande Antigua hosted 40 British Technical Education Council and CAPE Environmental Science students from the Antigua State College at its water treatment plant.
The group, which gathered on Friday February 6, 2015, toured and observed the Resort’s Waste Water Treatment Plant under the direction of Operator Andrew Belgrave and Environmental Health & Safety Manager Andrea Marshall.
Discussions on the water-recycling program were had and covered the scope of the operations beginning from the collection of seawater through to the desalination and treatment processes.
Marshall and Belgrave walked the students through the operation that ends with the supply of this water to Sandals hotel for drinking, cooking and eventual irrigation pruposes.
Some students expressed surprise at the process, with most being unaware that such an operation existed in Antigua and Barbuda to begin with.
The students said thanks to both Belgrave and Marshall for what they termed an “enlightening” experience in not only the operations of the Resort but also for their first-hand exposure to what was previously only known theoretically and might have been practiced on small scales.
The activity is in keeping with World Water Day 2015, which is observed on February 2 each year.
